June 2024

Head's Headline

I am always delighted to share the exceptional talent and hard work of our students who are involved in productions, trips and performances throughout the year. Coordinating these trips requires significant effort and organisation, and I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the staff members who have worked diligently to make these outings, performances and exhibitions possible. I would also like to commend our students for their exemplary behaviour during these trips, representing our school values perfectly; excellence, trust and respect.

First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated in the Read Through Time drama performance. Their dedication, creativity and passion were evident in every scene and they truly brought the stories to life. It was a captivating performance, showcasing the remarkable talent within our school. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Ms Smart, Mrs Ingleby, Mrs May and all the unsung behind the scenes staff,  who have tirelessly supported and guided the students throughout the preparation and execution of this event. The joy of seeing students grow in confidence as a result of these opportunities is the embodiment of our drivers of success, character and dignity.

Thank you to our Art department who hosted the Art and Photography Exhibition evening on 19th June. It was an evening filled with exceptional artistic talent by our GCSE and A Level candidates. Seeing our students' creativity displayed for their friends, family and public to view is one of my own personal highlights of the school calendar year. Particular thanks go to the students who took the time to talk me through their exhibits.

I am pleased to extend an invite to our upcoming Summer Concert on Monday 1st July. This event will be another fantastic opportunity to witness the outstanding abilities of our Performing Arts students. The concert promises to be a delightful evening filled with music from our 1st and 2nd Orchestra as well as the Jazz band and school choir. I encourage all of you to attend and support our talented students.

As well as applauding our talented performing arts students, I would also like to take a moment to congratulate our Year 11 and Year 13 students on their recent completion of their examinations. This is a crucial time for them, and we are confident that their hard work and dedication will yield excellent results. For our current Year 11 students, we are looking forward to welcoming them for our Sixth Form taster day on 25th June. This will be a valuable opportunity to experience life in the Sixth Form and begin to prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.

This term is also packed with exciting trips that provide our students with enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Among the many adventures planned, we have had trips to the  Design Museum for our Year 8 students, St Albans Cathedral for our Year 10s, a trip to Germany as part of our German Exchange program, and our PE students were able to take the opportunity to go to Lanzarote during half term. Year 9 and Year 12 textiles students enjoyed a trip to Graduate Fashion Week in London, Year 10 food technology students had a wonderful experience at Portobello Market, Year 7 students visited the historical Hampton Court Palace and our Year 10 Geography students went to River Chess and Milton Keynes as part of their GCSE Geography fieldwork. These trips are designed to complement our curriculum and provide practical learning opportunities that are both educational and enjoyable.

As we move forward into the final weeks of the term, I am filled with pride and optimism for all that our students and staff have accomplished and will continue to achieve. Your ongoing support as parents is invaluable, and I look forward to celebrating more successes together in the near future.

Thank you once again for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

Parents Association News

This month, various members of the PA volunteer to help out at social events at school. We sold refreshments at a drama performance earlier this week and we'll be at other events through July too such as the Summer Concert, the new Year 7 evening and Sports Day, to do more of the same. We don't raise a great deal in funds at these events but hope it makes you and your SCD student feel more welcome and refreshed while in school. Please feel free to come and say hello and offer to do a turn volunteering next year. Just an hour or two from several parents makes it easier for everyone. Maybe be the person who signs up and enrols a friend too. Go on, make our day.

While we were in school, the last of the GCSEs were happening. If your Year 11 child is now that well-deserved person of leisure, please feel free to donate their uniform to us for our next second hand uniform sale on the 13th July. We'll also happily take outgrown uniform and PE kit from other year groups too; there will be a cohort of new Year 7 parents, amongst others, eager to snap them up. Please send washed items in to Student Reception with your child or bring them to Main Reception yourself. They will be gratefully received and provide excellent fund raising.

We'll send out details of the sale via parent email and on our Facebook group soon.

Many thanks for your support, SCDPA
